Video Makers Help Make A Difference

April 29, 2009

I’m going to switch it up and talk about something very serious. Yesterday I had the pleasure of watching a documentary about “Invisible Children.” What this refers to are the thousands of children in Africa who are abducted from their sleep and turned into violent rebel soldiers for Joseph Kony’s rebel army. These kids are abducted at age 9-12, taken away from their home, and basically left invisible. Their parents and friends no longer know about their existence, maybe a letter home here and there.

This journey of “Invisible Children” started with 3 friends who both had a passion about making and editing movies. They decided to take a trip to Africa, Uganda in particular, to further video tape what was going. They were able to video tape the most gruesome scenes,  dead and multilated bodies, children holding weapons, attacks on villages, etc.

One of the most notable capturing they did on the camera was a child by the name of Jacob. Jacob was abducted at a young age along with his brother. His brother tried to escape and was thus killed in front of Jacob’s eyes. In order to keep his life, Jacob wasn’t able to shed a single tear in his eye…killer instinct. In his own words, Jacob stated that death would be better than life.

The 3 friends that captured all these moments on camera decided they wanted to do something, to help end this ongoing feud between the rebel army and the government. They showed the video, marched, protested, and thus had tens of thousands of followers supporting the movement to save the children and end this pointless war. They gained support from the government and came very close to help ending this war in Africa, but Kony declined.

Although the results didn’t turn out the way we all wanted, if it wasn’t for the 3 individuals that captured these incredible moments on film, a lot of us would have no idea about “Invisible Children.”

There is a lot more that I didn’t speak of so that you can watch the video. Please watch it here.

My friend Lyricks spent sometime in Uganda a few years back. He made a song and a video of his stay. Please watch:
